EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

  • A US district judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
