Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is making tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
