Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
